Will Washington Legalize Marijuana?

by Lewis & Laws

Legalizing Marijuana in the State of Washington Will be Put to a Vote

Originally, the United States thought that California would become the test state when it came to legalizing marijuana. At the last election, the state citizens had the right to vote on whether or not pot should be legalized and sold in regulated stores throughout California. The voters struck down the proposition, keeping pot illegal. While the drug is often smuggled and used, those who possess and sell it can be arrested for their actions. Now, Washington is challenging the federal ban on marijuana and coming forth as a potential test state for legalization. On November 6th, legalizing marijuana in the state of Washington will be put to a vote. If the legalization is approved, Washington will permit dealers to sell the drug in pot stores that are licensed by the state.

At present, Washington state officials are curious to see how the federal government would respond if voters supported legalization. The federal government may denounce the statute but choose to leave Washington alone. Or, they could meddle in Washington’s affairs and effectively end the legal marijuana. While marijuana has not been legalized yet in any state, some cities have reduced possession of small amounts of marijuana from a misdemeanor to an infraction. This means that the drug crime is punishable with a ticket, much like a parking violation would be. Colorado and Oregon also have full legalization options on their November ballot.

Washington’s I-502 is one of the most comprehensive marijuana proposals yet. It legalizes one ounce of marijuana for people who are 21 and older and creates a seed-to-store, closed, state-regulated monopoly that will bring in about $560 million more in new taxes. Because the government will reap such a financial benefit, they are more prone to support the legalization. If Washington votes in favor of marijuana, some men and women who are currently serving sentences for marijuana possession may be let off. Keep an eye on the marijuana legalization battle in this state and contact your criminal defense lawyer if you believe that this law can help to turn your case around!
